50 Contemporary Women Artists is a one-of-a-kind compendium that features a selection of women artists and architects who have made groundbreaking contributions to contemporary art.
50 contemporary women artistsProfiling an international cross-section of artists, 50 Contemporary Women Artists presents fresh perspectives on feminism and notions of cultural power. Using a variety of mediums, the artists in this book address themes of social, cultural, political, environmental, and psychological issues.
Heather Zises, Pregame Magazine art editor, created this book with John Gosslee three years ago. The idea came from a special Women’s Edition that John’s magazine Fjords Review ran in 2014 where Heather served as guest curator.
The edition did so well that it begged the question: Why were there were no books about contemporary women artists on the market? This is their endeavor to fill that void.
The book has many facets, including a diverse range of media, an international breadth of artists, and a foreword by Elizabeth Sackler, founder of the Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum.
The artists featured in this book have exhibited in world class institutions and galleries, and have been recognized for their work with distinguished awards, including 5 MacArthurs. From Judy Chicago to Kara Walker, Zoe Buckman to Michele Pred, Marilyn Minter to Maya Lin, there is no wall, floor or ceiling that has not been touched with their talent.
Since the launch, the book has been very well received. Recently, it won the Silver Award in the Art and Photography category for the 31st Annual IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards. It is now available at institutions like MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, The Hirshhorn, and ICA Boston, and is has also been acquired by top universities for their library collections like SVA, Hunter, and Christie’s Education.

Heather Zises is a cultural producer with 15 years of experience in curation, writing and public relations.

Heather specializes in contemporary art with a particular interest in feminist and identity-based practices. Having launched her career at Pace Gallery and Phillips, her projects include collaborations with Paddle8, Equity Gallery, Cluster Gallery, SCOPE Art Show, Art Index TV, Grey Area and FXCollaborative. She curated numerous exhibitions and site-specific installations at galleries, alternative spaces and art fairs worldwide.

Heather is co-editor of the award winning book 50 Contemporary Women Artists (Schiffer 2018) and is a contributing writer and art editor for diverse publications, including Quiet Lunch, Whitehot Magazine, Fjords Review and Pregame Magazine. 

Heather is also a founding member of Ninth Street Collective, a group of art administrators who focus on professional development for artists. Heather sits on the Advisory Board for Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, NY and is on the Board of Directors for The Nouveau Classical Project, a nonprofit that blends contemporary classical music with art and avant-garde fashion. Raised in Boston as a ballerina, Heather graduated from Cornell University with a BA in English and Dance, and has an MA in Art History and Connoisseurship from Christie’s Education.
